Leesburg - March 3, 2006 - Leesburg resident
Bill Redpath, current Libertarian National Committee (LNC) At-Large
Representative and long-time ballot access activist, is running
for Chair of the Libertarian National Committee. He brings
leadership and a long and distinguished record of accomplishments
at the state and national levels to the race. The election
will be held at the Libertarian National Party Convention on July
1-2, 2006, in Portland, OR.
Redpath is committed to three priorities: running more candidates
for office, raising money to run the best campaigns possible, and
electoral reform. His vision for the Party and his experience
in all levels of Libertarian politics over more than 20 years make
him a great candidate for National Chair of the LNC.
A member of the Libertarian Party since 1984, Redpath has become
the most well-known ballot access signature gatherer and has distinguished
himself in all areas of Libertarian politics. He has served
the Libertarian Party of Virginia as Chair, Vice-Chair and Treasurer,
and the Libertarian National Committee twice as Treasurer and currently
as an At-Large member.
In 2004 Redpath lead the petition effort at the National Ballot
Access project manager for the LNC. His leadership and hard
work resulted in Libertarian candidate Michael Badnarik being on
the ballot in 48 states and the District of Columbia. He
personally gathered more than 3,000 signatures in this effort.
Redpath brings a wealth of experience in the area of campaigning
and candidate support, having run for office three times, the first
for Virginia House of Delegates, the second for State Senate, and
finally with a historic run for Governor of Virginia in 2001. That
year Libertarians gathered enough signatures to put Redpath on
the ballot for Governor and Gary Reams on the ballot for Lieutenant
Governor, the first statewide ballot presence for the Libertarian
Party of Virginia.
Redpath’s strong belief in running more Libertarian candidates
for office starts with his commitment to the idea that the Libertarian
Party needs a National Political Director. The Party has
been without a Political Director since the departure of Ron Crickenberger
in 2004. Redpath strongly supports the idea that ballot access
is a core function of the National party, and cannot be left solely
to each state party.
In the area of National Committee election, Redpath advocates
a change to the Bylaws to have 14 at-large representatives instead
of the current five at-large representatives. The method
of selection would be by “choice voting,” a method
that he says would enhance the electability of LP candidates to
legislative bodies. More information on choice voting
is available at: www.fairvote.org/pr/choiceintro.htm.
