Reston - May 20, 2005 – Donny Ferguson,
the Libertarian candidate for the House of Delegates in the 36th
District in Northern Virginia, delivered the following statement
to commuters and reporters at a NoTollIncrease.com news conference
Thursday morning:
"My name is Donny Ferguson and I am the Libertarian candidate
for the House of Delegates here in the 36th District against Delegate
Ken Plum, chairman of the Dulles Corridor Rail Association and a
big reason why we have to be here today.
"But I also speak as a commuter and Reston resident to voice
my extreme displeasure with a drastic tax hike to subsidize a $4.2
billion railroad boondoggle that does not relieve traffic congestion.
"This is an unfair tax -- imposed by an unelected Board --
on people who will not be using Metro. It takes an additional $250
dollars a year out of the pockets of local commuters – all
to subsidize a wasteful railroad project that does not address our
traffic needs.
"The tax hike and railroad project are a bad deal for Reston.
It means higher taxes, more development and more congestion in our
community.
"It means higher taxes, because it will require $111 million
dollars a year in taxpayer subsidies. The 36th District already
voted down tax hikes for transportation in 2002, only to have a
new one imposed on us by an unelected Board – with the support
of our local Delegate.
"It means more development because the Dulles railroad plan
density packs Tyson's Corner-style development into Reston, extremely
dense development that destroys our community character, drives
up our taxes and further clogs our streets.
"And it means more congestion because the Dulles railroad's
own Environmental Impact Statement predicts it will not reduce traffic
congestion here in the Dulles corridor. In fact, it will likely
make traffic even worse, with commuters driving into Reston to park
their cars, and highway right-of-way eliminated to make way for
the railroad – right of way we need to expand and improve
the Toll Road to meet our needs.
"The 36th District does not support higher tolls and higher
taxes to subsidize more development and more congestion.
"They made that point crystal-clear at the polls in 2002,
and they are ready to do it again this November.
"If you'd like to know more about the tax hike and railroad
plan, and common-sense solutions to our traffic crisis, you can
go to www.NoTollIncrease.com and www.DonnyFerguson.com.
"Thank you."
